Another intreaty that she would be serious, however, produced the desired effect; and she soon satisfied Jane by her solemn assurances of attachment. When convinced on that article, Miss Bennet had nothing farther to wish.

But Lizzy, you have been very sly, very reserved with me. How little did you tell me of what passed at Pemberley and Lambton! I owe all that I know of it to another, not to you."

Elizabeth told her the motives of her secrecy. She had been unwilling to mention Bingley; and the unsettled state of her own feelings had made her equally avoid the name of his friend. But now she would no longer conceal from her his share in Lydia's marriage. All was acknowledged, and half the night spent in conversation.

"Good gracious!" cried Mrs. Bennet, as she stood at a window the next morning, "if that disagreeable Mr. Darcy is not coming here again with our dear Bingley! What can he mean by being so tiresome as to be always coming here? I had no notion but he would go a-shooting, or something or other, and not disturb us with his company. What shall we do with him? Lizzy, you must walk out with him again, that he may not be in Bingley's way."

Elizabeth could hardly help laughing at so convenient a proposal; yet was really vexed that her mother should be always giving him such an epithet.
母親想出這個(gè)辦法來，正是伊麗莎白求之不得的，她禁不住要笑出來，可是聽到母親老是說他討厭，她亦不免有些氣惱。

As soon as they entered, Bingley looked at her so expressively, and shook hands with such warmth, as left no doubt of his good information; and he soon afterwards said aloud, "Mrs. Bennet, have you no more lanes hereabouts in which Lizzy may lose her way again today?"
兩位貴客一走進(jìn)門，彬格萊便意味深長(zhǎng)地望著她，熱烈地跟她的握手，她一看見這情形，便斷定他準(zhǔn)是消息十分靈通；不多一會(huì)兒工夫，他果然大聲說道：“班納特太太，這一帶還有什么別的曲徑小道，可以讓麗萃今天再去迷路嗎？”

"I advise Mr. Darcy, and Lizzy, and Kitty," said Mrs. Bennet, "to walk to Oakham Mount this morning. It is a nice long walk, and Mr. Darcy has never seen the view."
班納特太太說：“我要?jiǎng)襁_(dá)西先生、麗萃和吉蒂，今天上午都上奧克漢山去。這一段長(zhǎng)路走起來挺有味，達(dá)西先生還沒有見過那兒的風(fēng)景呢。”

"It may do very well for the others," replied Mr. Bingley; "but I am sure it will be too much for Kitty. Won't it, Kitty?"
"彬格萊先生說：“對(duì)他們兩人當(dāng)然再好也沒有了，我看吉蒂一定吃不消。是不是，吉蒂？”

Kitty owned that she had rather stay at home. Darcy professed a great curiosity to see the view from the Mount, and Elizabeth silently consented. As she went up stairs to get ready, Mrs. Bennet followed her, saying, "I am quite sorry, Lizzy, that you should be forced to have that disagreeable man all to yourself. But I hope you will not mind it: it is all for Jane's sake, you know; and there is no occasion for talking to him, except just now and then. So, do not put yourself to inconvenience."
吉蒂說她寧可待在家里。達(dá)西表示非常想到那座山上去看看四面的風(fēng)景。伊麗莎白默默表示同意，正要上樓去準(zhǔn)備，班納特太太在她后面說：“麗萃，我很對(duì)不起你，逼你去跟那個(gè)討厭的人在一起，你可不要計(jì)較。你要知道，這都是為了吉英；你只消隨便敷衍敷衍他，不必多費(fèi)心思?！?/div>?

During their walk, it was resolved that Mr. Bennet's consent should be asked in the course of the evening. Elizabeth reserved to herself the application for her mother's. She could not determine how her mother would take it; sometimes doubting whether all his wealth and grandeur would be enough to overcome her abhorrence of the man. But whether she were violently set against the match, or violently delighted with it, it was certain that her manner would be equally ill adapted to do credit to her sense; and she could no more bear that Mr. Darcy should hear the first raptures of her joy, than the first vehemence of her disapprobation.
散步的時(shí)候，兩人決定當(dāng)天下午就去請(qǐng)求班納特先生表示允許；母親那兒由伊麗莎白自己去說。她不知道母親是否會(huì)贊成。母親實(shí)在太厭惡他了，因此伊麗莎白有時(shí)候竟會(huì)認(rèn)為，即使以他財(cái)產(chǎn)地位，也挽回不了母親的心，可是，母親對(duì)這門婚姻無論是堅(jiān)決反對(duì)也好，欣喜若狂也好，她的出言吐語反正都是不得體。叫人家覺得她毫無見識(shí)。她對(duì)達(dá)西先生不是欣喜欲狂地表示贊成，便是義憤填胸地表示反對(duì)，伊麗莎白想到這里，心里實(shí)在受不了。
