Waterworld

Critically panned when it was released in 1995, Waterworld, a Kevin Costner flick, was a disaster on two levels, making back only $88 million of its reported $175 million budget. The plot is silly, but the circumstance is plausibly grim — it’s set in a future where polar ice caps have melted, flooding the planet and forcing survivors to travel the seas in search of dry land and fresh water.

The Day the Earth Stood Still 地球停轉(zhuǎn)之日

The 1951 sci-fi classic gets a remake with Keanu Reeves as the alien Klaatu, who is prepared to have his robot enforcer, Gort, destroy the earth in order to prevent a global crisis caused by humans not changing their wasteful, violent ways. As Fox’s first green production, the eco-initiative mandated reducing paper waste; using recyclable and biodegradable materials and sustainably produced lumber in sets and props; and conserving energy via hybrid vehicles, bio-diesel generators and efficient appliances on set.

An Inconvenient Truth

2006’s Oscar-winning documentary brought former Vice President Al Gore’s global warming crusade to the multiplex and into the mainstream. More than just a lecture and scarier than any horror flick, it illustrates in no uncertain terms what man has done to the planet and what will happen if we don’t act now to reverse the damage.

04.后天

The Day After Tomorrow

Global warming unleashes global catastrophe in the form of tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and a tsunami — ushering in a new Ice Age in this 2004 blockbuster. The effects are powerful but the plot’s predictable: climatologist hero (Dennis Quaid) heads to devastated Manhattan to rescue his son (Jake Gyllenhaal). Director Roland Emmerich had destroied Earth all over again in 2012, an apocalyptic disaster epic in 2009.

The sweet, romantic, Oscar shoo-in cartoon about a lonely trash-compacting robot makes its eco-point subtly and succinctly — it’s set in a future Earth that has become a garbage-covered wasteland, left to rot because fat, lazy humans ruined it. The hopeful ending — it is Disney movie, after all — reminds us it’s not too late to change.

While the hit sequel about wayward zoo animals is played for laughs by its cast of comedians (Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer and Sacha Baron Cohen), there’s a minor environmental plot thread with a potentially serious outcome: stranded tourists selfishly dam a river, diverting the water supply and threatening the idyllic ancestral watering hole. The zoo crew saves the day, of course, but not before the movie makes a valid point about preserving nature.

For proof that upsetting the ecology can have dire consequences, see this 2004 documentary that chronicles what happened in Tanzania when the non-indigenous Nile Perch was introduced to Lake Victoria in the 1960s to combat over-fishing. The piscine predator devoured the native species, ruined the lake’s ecosystem, and has had a disastrous economic and social impact on the local economy, now dependent on exporting a commodity its impoverished people can’t afford.

Happy Feet

?The Best Animated Film Oscar of 2006 went to this cartoon about an adorable penguin whose inability to sing sets him apart. (Luckily, the little guy can tap dance up a storm.) Amid the eye-poppingly choreographed musical numbers there are messages about prejudice, individuality, tolerance and being environmentally conscious. A pivotal plot point involves the over-fishing of the penguins’ feeding grounds, endangering the habitat and the species.

Mad Max

Yes, it’s a violent road chase revenge movie, but this nearly 30-year-old action flick is surprisingly green-minded. Besides launching the career of Mel Gibson, this 1979 dystopian, anarchic vision of the future is notable for its possibly prophetic depiction of a society’s collapse due to depletion of oil resources. The Road Warrior sequel two years later continued the theme.

?Ice Age: The Meltdown 冰河世紀(jì)2消融

?This 2006 animated sequel has its prehistoric protagonists fleeing the melting ice that will flood their valley and bring premature (though inevitable) extinction. The story still resonates millions of years later because the planet’s remaining glaciers are disappearing at an alarming rate: If global warming trends continue as predicted, Glacier National Park will have no glaciers left by 2030.
