Drew Shindell on regulating greenhouse gases and improving air quality

Drew Shindell is a climate scientist with the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. At a science meeting in late 2009, he told EarthSky about his approach to studying the way various emissions interact in Earth’s atmosphere.

德魯?辛德爾是美國航天局戈達(dá)德太空研究所的氣候?qū)W家，他研究了人類活動排放的廢氣對地球大氣環(huán)境的影響。09年末在一次科學(xué)會議上，他向我們節(jié)目透露了研究的最新進(jìn)展。

Drew Shindel: In a more abstract physical science world, you look at what’s the overall effect of methane, or carbon dioxide, or ozone, – one thing at the time. in fact, if you were to try to reduce emissions, they would be by particular activities – like burning coal to generate electricity, or driving vehicles.

德魯?辛德爾：在抽象的物理科學(xué)世界，我們關(guān)注的是甲烷、二氧化碳、臭氧這些氣體分別對大氣整體環(huán)境產(chǎn)生的影響。實際上，減少廢氣排放需要從具體的活動著手，比如在燃煤發(fā)電、機(jī)車供能等過程中設(shè)法減排。

Shindell said that burning coal, for example, doesn’t just emit carbon dioxide gas. There are also other particles and gases that escape into the air.

以燃煤為例，辛德爾告訴我們?nèi)济哼^程不僅產(chǎn)生二氧化碳，還有別的氣體和微粒逸散到空氣中。

Drew Shindell: These other things that both lead to warming, that are non-CO2 agents, also contribute to air pollution. So it gives us an opportunity to deal with two large-scale environmental problems at once.

德魯?辛德爾：這些氣體和微粒同樣導(dǎo)致氣候變暖，造成空氣污染。因此通過限制廢氣排放量，我們可以同時解決兩大環(huán)境問題。

Shindell said a good policy would target a greenhouse gas-emitting activity, and regulate it in order to improve air quality and slow climate change.

辛德爾認(rèn)為，集中精力處理好溫室氣體排放問題，不失為改善空氣質(zhì)量，延緩氣候變暖的一大良策。

Drew Shindell: A joint strategy to deal with both air quality and climate change at the same time can provide better solutions to both problems, than we’ve been pursuing to date, which is looking at both independently.

德魯?辛德爾：到目前為止，人們都是分開考慮空氣污染和氣候變化問題，但如果把二者結(jié)合起來綜合處理，其效果要好很多。
