A: You've been listening to Listeners Garden. I'm LPC.
B: And I'm DS. Nowadays, alcohol bars, KTV bars and internet bars are commonly seen in China. But these conventional bars seem to have become too commonplace to satisfy the diverse needs of bar enthusiasts.

A: So the emergence of various kinds of special theme bars with target patrons is growing strong in Chinese cities. Some of them are tranquil retreats from the hustle and bustle of modern life, and some are superb meeting places for fun activities and catching up with friends. These theme bars have given people more choices of where to spend their leisure time, and at the same time brought new concepts to the Chinese bar culture.

B: In today's digital era, some people find it less necessary to read books since they can get so much information from the internet. But no matter how science and technology develop, it's certain that the internet can never replace books completely.

A: So reading books is still a hobby for numerous people in the multimedia age. For book lovers, bookshops and libraries are certainly their favorite haunts. But now in many Chinese cities, people fond of reading have another wonderful site to go, the book bar.

B: The book bars are all elegantly and artistically decorated and present a relaxing atmosphere as cozy as at home. Here you can not only buy new books, but also sit in a comfortable sofa or chair, reading your favorite books and magazines while enjoying music, food and drinks. When you feel tired, you can take a nap any time you want.

A: Most of the book bars are bustling hives of literary activity, where lectures, forums and salons are regularly held at weekends and holidays. Their good atmosphere and services are a great draw to book lovers. Many people would bury themselves among piles of books for a whole day.

B: For book lovers, the book bars are definitely wonderful places to go. But for those who are seeking novel ways of hanging out with friends, the board game bar is becoming a fashionable choice.

A: Board games are popular in many countries. China also has some traditional table games like mahjong, chess and checkers. But today they are considered games for the elderly and hold little interest for the young.

A: In the past two years, more and more popular foreign board games have been imported, and at the same time, many new board games have been developed in China. They are drawing more and more urbanites from computer games to the board game bars.

B: Board game bars began to boom in southern Chinese cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou in 2008, and now Beijing and many other big cities are following the trend as well.

A: Different from online games, board games require people to play together in real places, so to party animals, playing board games gives them a new option to relax and socializing with friends.

B: In the quickly changing modern society, our lives are also assuming a faster pace. People today are shouldering more pressure in work and life. So some special bars have emerged to provide innovative ways for their customers to relieve tension and stress.

A: The chewing bar is one of them. It's becoming a popular place for office workers to seek refuge from heavy work pressures.

B: Psychological research has proven that chewing gum is an effective way to release pressure. So many chewing bars have sprung up in and around office buildings for white color workers to take a gum break and chew their pressure away.

A: Like chewing bars, the cry bar also provides an outlet for people to ease stress, anxiety and depression.

B: Crying is a good therapy for maintaining a balanced mind and preventing the tension building up. So the special cry bar gives people a place to vent their bad feelings with a good cry so as to relieve pressure and sadness. The clients usually put on a relaxing smile after drying their tears in the bar.

A: There are many other theme bars in China, such as milk bars, fruit bars, soccer bars, painting bars, toy bars, and a diversity of DIY bars where people can make cakes and chocolates, weave cloth, create pottery ware, clay figurines and other handicrafts all by themselves.

B: One month ago, the first government-backed gay bar on the Chinese mainland opened in the city of Dali in southern China's Yunnan province.

A: The bar is run by a local NGO for HIV/AIDS prevention. The bar's manager, Zhang Jianbo, is the founder and head of the organization. He says the bar will not be operated for purely commercial purposes, rather it will serve as a platform to raise awareness in the gay community about AIDS.

B: Our lifestyle is changing everyday, and trends come and go all the time. Some once popular theme bars finally became outdated and disappeared, while new theme bars are constantly emerging to enrich people's lives and the Chinese bar culture. No matter what themes and patrons they target, these unique bars have helped to create a more colorful life and enjoyable society.
