It's a strong warning for red meat eaters. A new study says that if you eat just a quarter pound of meat every day, it could give you a higher risk of dying from cancer and heart disease. Actually, this is a big news, because this is not just about the risk of being unhealthy; this is that it will raise your chances of dying early.

About this study

It's a huge study. It looked at half a million people. And it also linked red meat with death, not just illnesses, but illnesses that lead to death. It followed those older people for ten years and it found that people who ate the most red meat(like hamburger and processed meats like hot dogs, bacon and cold cuts) had a greater chance of dying earlier than those who didn't. Over 10 years, eating the equivalent of a quarter-pound hamburger daily were at dramaticaly increased risk of death, as compared to people who ate only 5 ounces a week. According to the new study, men were at 22% increased risk of death from cancer and 27% increased risk of heart disease. Women were at a 20% increased risk of death from cancer and a 50% increased risk of dying from heart disease.

What makes red meat so dangerous?

Red meat is high in saturated fat which is really our top risk factor for heart disease. Some other studies have shown if you flame broil it, it might create cancer-forming compounds and the processed meat were no better than the fresher red meats. Besides, the processed meats are also high in salt which increases your risk factor for other things particularly stroke, high blood pressure, ect.

Is this study reliable?

This study was done by the National Institutes of Health, not by anybody with any ulterior motive. A lot of experts and researchers were involved and so many people were studied in this study for a very long time. So the study is believed to be very reliable. And the researchers are not suggesting we all become vegan or we all go to a vegetarian diet. They are simply saying we have to be very careful about the red meat we have.

How much red meat a day is OK?

Based on this study, only five aunces a week is ok. If you want to split it out over seven days, that's ok, but it's just a sliver.

other options

Actually, there are a lot of options. Chicken, fish, eggs and other sources of protein, beans and nuts. We don't have to rely on red meat for all of our nutriants.
