Steven: How different are Chinese students from American students in your class?

Dr. Seymour Papert: Most of them are very serious. I think that, it’s hard to say, I do think this seriousness, whether it is the right word, but I think Chinese students usually have a better idea of why they are learning and what they are learning and what they want to do with it. And most of the American students are more open. I think it’s advantage and disadvantage in both ways. Maybe Chinese students do very well and they know what they are doing, but often it’s more narrow.

Steven: They’re really focused.

Dr. Seymour Papert: They’re really focused. But being really focused also means you can do what you are doing well, but you might miss other things. On the other side, you didn’t look at it them cause you are following your direction.

Steven: Somebody’s Chinese students just want to study their major instead of going out with their basketball players or something.

Dr. Seymour Papert: Or other intellectual areas at MIT. And at MIT there isn’t much basketball. But many MITs. Of course, many American MIT’s students are the same，of course，I think, no generalization is true, but some statistically, you know that, American students are more likely to look on the side and say what that person is doing and that might be interesting and maybe I can pick up the an idea that can be used in my own work.

Steven: Always curious. Right?

Dr. Seymour Papert: A little bit more. I’m sure everybody is curious, but they let their curiosity have more freedom.
