While some people share their support with others through thoughtful words or kind gestures, a group of Twitter users have taken a more unique approach.

On April 23rd, Kerione, an 18-year-old American teenager, was compared to a cheesecake after posting a snap of herself wearing a red and white prom dress on Twitter.

The photo soon went viral and thousands jumped to the young girl's defence... by sharing selfies of themselves and comparing them to cheesecakes.

After thousands shared Kerione's photo, the hashtag #CompareYourselfToACheesecake2016 was created by a young Twitter user who wanted to urge others to stand up for her.

'I've dealt with so much harassment and bullying online,' the hashtag creator Kenna Sharp, 16, told Mashable.

'It's something that doesn't even phase me anymore but when somebody else is being attacked for things they shouldn't be attacked for, I feel extremely inclined to come to their defense.'

Thousands of photos have since flooded social media with men and women comparing themselves to cheesecakes, decadent slices of mud cake and cupcakes.

'Shouldn't have to worry about being judged especially, that girl was beautiful,' one woman wrote.

'The #CompareYourselfToACheesecake2016 is the reason the Internet exists,' another wrote next a photo of herself next to a slice of chocolate cheesecake.

'I mean... what else should we use social media for?' Questioned a red velvet cake fan.

Each social media user was sure to compare themselves to a cake that had a similar colour scheme to themselves - many of them rocking colourful hair to match their chosen slice.

Others used Snapchat filters or make up to create their desired look before snapping a picture.

An overwhelmed Kerione, has retweeted a number of the photos and thanked users multiple times for their support.
