The joy that a dog's companionship can bring is timeless, but many may often feel that a canine's life is too short-lived.

One woman has spent the last 20 years capturing the essence of this heart-rending emotion, with portraits that chronicle several dogs throughout their lives - from their mischievous puppy years into old-age.

In book Dog Years: Faithful Friends And Now, Massachusetts-based photographer Amanda Jones captures images of canines across the span of their lives - accompanied by touching testimonies from their loving owners.

From Labradors to poodles and bulldogs, the portrait collection features dogs of all breeds.

In each of the pet profiles, the first image shows the dogs as young as six months, paired with a photograph of them years later, often as old as 16 - showing the stark contrast.

In the first images, many are energetic and bumbling puppies, with glossy fur and alert expressions.?Their portraits a decade later, all tell a different story, with many resting back on their hind legs, their fur grayed and eyes dulled with age.

But most touching, are the testimonies provided by the owners that accompany each set of images.

In one testimony, Clare Matschullat, owner of an adopted mixed breed named Maddy - pictured at five years and then at 10 years old - talks of the illnesses both have endured while together.

'While raising each other, we faced my hospitalisation?for complications from leukemia, a year of rehabilitation, my parents' divorce, moving to New York, graduate school, and her diagnosis and?treatment for lymphoma. It's the two of us against the world,' Clare explained.?

In another pet profile, Amanda photographed Briscoe, a Brusells Griffon, at the age of one, and then at the age of ten.

His owner, Jessica Pell, explained that it was his personality that first attracted her to adopting the dog, and how his presence helped her make friends.

She explained: 'It was so hard to pick out a dog, until I noticed Briscoe. He was the only dog?that was hanging out with an adult Whippet. He just seemed so smart and?social.

He shared: 'To me, he takes away all of my stress. My stress level in the fashion industry is very high.?

'His little body just seems to take it all out of me at the end of the day. We have a friendship that is really unique.?

'I speak to him like a?human and he responds really well to it. He is my spiritual guidance. Dao means 'the way' and he certainly has lived up to his name.' ?

Photographer and author Amanda, was inspired to create the book by her own dog, a long-haired dachshund Lily - one at eight months, two years, seven years and then 15 years old - who then passed away during the making of the book.

'We bought a house, had a baby, and through it all dear Lily was there with us—passing the time, being by our sides, joining us in our adventures of life.'

Taking 20 years to put together the book, Amanda admits that there has not always been a happy ending for each of the dogs she began the journey with.

'In working on this book, I rejoined dogs, couples, and families who I had worked with years ago,' explains Amanda.

'Some dogs had been lost to illness and accidents. Most are living amazingly long, happy lives in perfect surroundings.'?

Amanda believes that over decades, many canines and owners begin to resemble each other, which makes the personal connection between both even more strong.

She explains: 'Owners and dogs had aged, become gray, wrinkled in the eyes, and less spry.?

'The visual impact of comparing the young and the old varies greatly from dog to dog, just as it does from person to person.?

'It is this semblance of ourselves and our souls in their eyes that gives us such a deep connection with dogs.'

'One thing that remains constant is the love people and dogs have for each other. That does not change, no matter how many dog years go by.'
