Wolfe could have asked his housemate directly for it, in which case he would have to think of an excuse for wanting the information. Wolfe could not afford to tell the truth nor did he want to lie to his housemate. Wolfe never intended things to get tangled up. That left the option of secretly extracting the information from his housemate's phone without him knowing. Well, for sure the trust between him and his housemate would be scarred if the housemate did come to find out what Wolfe had done.
