This Year's National Day for Helping the Disabled Themed with Education

This year's National Day for Helping the Disabled, with the theme, 'enhancing education for the disabled', has caught people's attention.

In China, there are more than 83 million people with various disabilities, accounting for over 6 percent of the total population.

However, the development of a sound education system for the disabled is a problem in China.

'People's Daily' published an article saying governments should fully mobilize all social forces to create a suitable educational environment for the disabled and to raise people's awareness.

The article points out that as of 2008, over 1,600 special schools for the disabled were established in China.

Most of the schools are located in urban areas. Those living in rural areas have difficulty receiving primary or secondary education.

The article says the central government should allocate more money to establish special schools in rural areas.

In the meantime, the government should take steps towards developing more special needs professionals.

Moreover, the article says the lack of concern for the disabled also impedes them from receiving a normal education.

Handicapped facilities in the city are often occupied by the public. For instance, motorists parking on the blind walks.

This article suggests that Chinese society has a responsibility to promote a coordinated development of a sound education system for the disabled.
