Mainland, Taiwan negotiators underscore economic exchanges, cooperation

Negotiators from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have stressed the significance of enhanced cross-Straits economic exchanges and cooperation amid the international financial turmoil.
They reached the consensus at a preparatory meeting for Sunday's talks between the chief negotiators of the two sides.
Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of the island's Straits Exchange Foundation, arrived in the mainland city of Nanjing Saturday for a new round of talks with his mainland counterpart, Chen Yunlin, President of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits.

China's central bank chief says overall performance of Chinese economy better than expected

China's central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan says the overall performance of the Chinese economy is better than expected.
Speaking at the International Monetary and Financial Committee meeting in Washington, Zhou Xiaochuan said there are signs of gradual stabilization.

Chinese defense minister leaves for Russia visit

Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie has left for Russia on an official visit.
He will also attend the defense ministers' meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization slated for Tuesday and Wednesday in Moscow.

Death toll rises to 19 from southwest China bus-truck crash

The death toll has risen to 19 from a traffic collision in southwest China's Yunnan Province.
21 injured people are being treated in hospital.
A truck that carried watermelon bumped into the back of a domestic tourist bus on an expressway in Chuxiong early Saturday, and both fell off the road.
An initial investigation found the collision happened when the bus slowed down for warning signs set up where another truck hit the median barrier earlier.

China on alert to prevent swine flu infection

China has issued an emergency notice requiring people to report flu-like symptoms at the point of entry when coming from the deadly swine flu affected places.
China's ministries of health and agriculture said they are closely monitoring the development of the situation.
The Ministry of Health said it has organized experts to study prevention measures and would enhance contact with the World Health Organization.

WHO declares swine flu outbreak "public health emergency"

The World Health Organization has declared the swine flu outbreak in Mexico and the United States a "public health emergency of international concern" and urged countries to be alert.
WHO Director-general Margaret Chan said the new H1N1 swine flu strain has the potential to turn into a worldwide pandemic.
" I think that at this point in time, it is very important that all regions of the World Health Organisation work with our countries to heighten surveillance so that we know exactly whether this new disease is causing infection in human being in countries other than the US and Mexico."
The outbreak also reached Texas, California and Kansas in the United States, leaving 10 people infected.
