Carol Bartz's move to the corner office at Yahoo! marks another break in the glass ceiling for executive women.
The 60-year-old former chief executive of Autodesk is among the very few women who have had the chance to lead a second, large public company.
But there are still just 23 woman at the helm of the nation's 1,000 largest companies. Besides Bartz, only Paula Roseput Reynolds has been at the helm of two public companies--AGL and Safeco.
Bartz's deep roots in Silicon Valley and her reputation as a pragmatic, blunt-speaking strategist who has weathered some tough spots in her career and personal life may help her devise a plan to turn around Yahoo!.
She was CEO at Autodesk for 14 years, much longer than most chief executives, whose median tenure is just five years.
When Bartz first took on the job at Autodesk, the atmosphere was chaotic, even by Silicon Valley standards. Bartz joked that her task was "playing Wendy to the Lost Boys of Autodesk." The company had just one product, profits were sagging and employees, who often brought their dogs and cats to the office, weren't used to answering to a higher authority.
巴茲曾戲言她的任務(wù)是“與Autodesk迷失的孩子玩游戲(playing Wendy to the Lost Boys of Autodesk)”。
Bartz quickly imposed a more traditional management structure, with schedules for product launches and regular performance reviews. While doing this, she also coped with breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with just days after joining Autodesk from Sun Microsystems. Afraid to tell anyone that she had a "female disease," she took off just a month from work after having a radical mastectomy, instead of the prescribed six to eight weeks.
She faced another hurdle during the dot-com boom of the late 1990s when Autodesk, which makes software for engineering, architecture and other businesses, slid into obscurity. Many of her employees were suddenly being wooed to dot-com start-ups with the promise that they'd become millionaires.
She convinced her best talent to stay put but also realized the Internet was radically altering business--and Autodesk had to adapt and learn to use the network to design, manufacture and market products differently.
Under her watch, Autodesk began customizing products for specific industries and also began selling software by subscription so customers could use it for a certain period of time and then get free updates. In addition, even when Autodesk's profits were sagging in the last downturn, she made a major investment in three-dimensional software, from which the company subsequently profited greatly.
As a business leader, Bartz also is known as someone who doesn't hold grudges and is willing to change her mind. At one point, she fired Carl Bass, the company's technical wizard at the time, over strategic disagreements. She quickly realized this was a mistake, hired him back a few months later and eventually named him her successor.
Bartz admitted she wasn't ready to retire when she handed over the CEO spot to Bass in May 2006. "I cried my eyes out," she said in an interview then. But she also knew Bass was getting offers elsewhere and she concluded that stepping aside was the right thing to do instead of spending years grooming another successor. "It's very good to leave a job when you still love it," she said at the time.
Bartz, a director at Cisco and Intel, has often attributed her advance at big technology companies to her early interest in math.
After her mother died when she was eight, she was raised by her grandmother in Wisconsin. At the small rural school she attended, she wasn't discouraged from excelling in math and science. And as a scholarship student at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she worked as a waitress to earn extra money, she was among a handful of female computer science majors.
Bartz is married and has a daughter in her early twenties, but she's long warned women managers coming up behind her that trying to achieve equal balance between their careers and personal lives often just leads to guilt. She has told them that sometimes work takes precedence, and other times home life will be the top priority. She once remarked that "you basically have to catch things before they hit the floor."
