A university has torn down anti-cheating posters from its exam hall after realising they had answers to a maths exam written on them.

Officials at Plymouth University installed the signs ahead of the summer exams season – but failed to realise that a stock image of a hand covered in scribbles contained genuine formulae.

Students have since claimed that spotting the notes gave them a boost in a final-year maths exam – with one estimating that he will now score 10 per cent higher than he would have without the help.

The formulae cover areas including probability, trigonometry and probability. It includes a version of the complicated De Moivre’s theorem.

Exam bosses claim the sign would have been too far away for students to read it from their desks – but some have claimed the extra knowledge boosted their result by an entire grade.

The picture chosen by officials appears to have come from Shutterstock, the stock photography website, and has the title: ‘hand of student with cheat sheet for math exam’.

Although parts of the hand are obscured by a large red circle with a line through the middle, substantial parts of the formulae are still visible.

The university did not realise the blunder until it was pointed out by student website The Plymouth Tab. It is unclear how many students could have been helped by the sign.

In a statement, the university told The Tab: 'the poster was located outside of the exam hall, and would therefore be of limited use to anyone prior to their sitting the exam. In light of the concerns raised, however, the University has replaced the posters.’
