中國代表團(tuán)升國旗入駐冬奧村(視頻)
Just about all the teams and athletes have arrived in the Olympic Village and one of them is of course China, with the delegation from the Middle Kingdom, holding a flag raising ceremony in the Athletes' Village soon after they had settled in.
Before the ceremony, a singing and dancing performance was on show. And the Olympic village mayor, Yelena Isen-bayeva, who is also the two-time Olympic pole vault champion gave her welcome speech to the Chinese delegation. Then the flag raising ceremony took place, with 45 Chinese athletes and officials watching on, including the Chinese Deputy Chef De Mission, Xiao Tian.
After the ceremony, Xiao confirmed that Vancouver Winter Games runner-up Tong Jian has been selected as the flag bearer for the Olympic opening ceremony, which will take place tomorrow. Tong took a silver medal in the pairs with his girlfriend, Pang Qing, in Vancouver four years ago. The pair also won the 2006 and 2010 world championships.
With four-time Olympic short track winner Wang Meng out of the picture due to an injury sustained in a training session three weeks ago, the 34-year-old is the most decorated and experienced athlete in the delegation. He is also the oldest of the 66 Chinese athletes.
"Tong Jian was the figure skating doubles silver medalist at the Vancouver Winter Games. He has also claimed World Cup and Grand Prix Finals championships several times. Tong has excellent competition results, and has been on the scene for many, many years. He is the best choice for the flag bearer," Xiao said.
