All the wisdom of the ages, all the stories that have delighted mankind for centuries, are easily and cheaply available to all of us within the covers of books, but we must know how to avail ourselves of this treasure and how to get the most from it. The most unfortunate people in the world are those who have never discovered how satisfying it is to read good books. I am most interested in people, in them and finding out about them. Some of the most remarkable people met existed only in a writer's imagination, then on the pages of his book, and then, again, in my imagination. I've found in books new friends, new societies and new words. If I am interested in people, others are interested not so much in "who" as in "how". "Who" in the books includes everybody from science-fiction superman 200 centuries in the future all the way back to the first figures in history.
歲月沉淀的智慧，千年不衰的故事，只要打開扉頁，這一切便唾手可得。如何擁有這些瑰寶，如何掌握其精華，卻是我們最該費心思了解的知識。世界上最不幸的人就是那些從未領略過閱讀佳作樂趣的人。 我對書中的人物感興趣，樂衷于與人交往，了解他們。一些超凡脫俗之輩只存在于作者的想像中，接著躍然于紙上，然后徘徊于我的腦海里。在書海里，我覓得了新朋友，窺見了新社會，發(fā)現(xiàn)了新世界。 如果說我感興趣的人，別人感興趣的，與其說是人，還不如說是事。書里的人物，從歷史里記載的第一批歷史人物一直到科幻小說里出現(xiàn)在兩百年后的超人，形形色色，應有盡有。
