To begin with, I do not agree that teachers should be rated bytheir students alone, as this is incredibly problematic.

If a male teacher is very handsome, or a female teacheris very beautiful, they may receive higher scores from students ofthe opposite sex. In regard to teacher evaluation, there are manycomplexities andinherent(內(nèi)在的,固有的) problems.

The best way to assess the actual quality of instruction would beto measure teachers’ reviews of their peers, the students’ reviewsof their instructors, and finally to take into account all the examscores of the students. Rating teachers’ performance is a complexissue. Including both other teachers’ and students’ evaluationswould be a good step in evaluating teachersfairly.

首先,我不贊成只由學生來評估教師,因為這會產(chǎn)生極大問題。學生評估教師時很可能帶著主觀情緒,未必會依據(jù)課堂質(zhì)量做出評估。如果一名男教師非常英俊,或者一名女教師非常漂亮,他們很可能得到異性學生更高的評分。如果某位教師不留家庭作業(yè),或者允許學生在課堂上看電影,那他/她很可能得到很高的評分,但事實上他/她并不該得到這樣高的分數(shù)。這種情況在中學生中尤為常見。

另一方面,只由其他教師評估某位教師的教學質(zhì)量的做法也是錯誤的。由于其他教師是同事,而同事之間的競爭不可避免,這就可能會導致帶有偏見的評估。我的一位歷史學教授學識淵博、專業(yè)素養(yǎng)很高,因而在學生中有很高的威望。但由于歷史系其他教授的嫉妒,他在系里并不受歡迎。你可以想象,教師之間的競爭會引起很多負面情緒,例如憎恨、嫉妒和猜疑。因此,教師不一定總能公正地評估其他教師的教學質(zhì)量。

教師評估這一程序存在其復雜性,也有許多固有的缺陷。評估教學質(zhì)量最好的方法就是參考其他教師和學生兩方面的意見,再結(jié)合學生的考試成績進行綜合評定。評估教師的教學質(zhì)量是個十分復雜的問題,綜合考慮其他教師和學生的評估會是公正測評教師教學質(zhì)量的一種合理方式。
