背景介紹:

The Plight of Higher Education

China is witnessing a historical large number of graduates (6.99 m) this year. And numerous our young graduates are suffering from unemployment whereas enterprises also complaining about the difficulties of finding qualified candidates for vacant positions.

On the other side of our planet, due to the economic crises, youth unemployment is a most pressing problem facing Europe as well. Thanks to a dual system of schooling (academic education and vocational education) and working experience, Germany, however, became a winner in reducing youth unemployment rate again.

話題:

Germany’s experience reminds us about this week’s topic:
1. Do we really need an academic-orientated course in our universities and colleges, regardless of what job markets’ needs? Or do our higher education system should concentrate more on practical knowledge that urgently needed by the job market?
2. What kind of qualities that our enterprises are looking for?
3. Write about anything that related with finding a job.

范例1:

People hold different perceptions of tertiary education. Although higher education is recognised by many as the most important predictor of one’s success, its efficacy has been subject to long discussion. Higher education, in my opinion, should be a hybrid of academic education and vocational education.

To begin with, nobody can deny that academic education in our universities and colleges are successful to some extent. Numerous famous scientists and professors in the top universities worldwide, more or less, have education backgrounds from Chinese universities or colleges. Furthermore, academic knowledge can lay a solid foundation for individual’s career development. And it is also beneficial for improving critical thinking skills, analytical skills as well as problem-solving skills, which are crucial to augment the average population quality of China.

However, admittedly, the majority of graduates will find a job in the end. Therefore, naturally, they expect to gain a promising and decent future through higher education. That is the reason why tertiary education should concentrate more on vocational education instead of pure academic training. Moreover, not all the knowledge, experience and skills can be imparted to students by teaching. Apprenticeships, as far as I am concerned, should be an alternative option.

So, from the junior year on, our universities and colleges can offer various courses that range from academic educations to vocational educations, which can be chosen on the principle of individual’s future plan. And in the last year, more intern opportunities as well as apprentice positions should be available for those students who want to find a job after graduation.

To summarise, the tertiary education are the future of our country and it should be more flexible and customisable to our students in accord with the reality needs of our society.

范例2:

As the huge amount of graduates surge into the labour force each year, the competition in job market is unbelievable fierce which results in a high unemployment rate. Looking into the root of the circumstances, some blame that the academic sector has been over-emphasised in college while the technical training is relatively insufficient. Personally, I would side with this opinion.

Firstly, we should clarify the main purpose of college education. In China, it is widely believed that a college degree is the ticket to a decent life. For this reason, the majority of candidates struggle to knock into the gates of universities. Meanwhile employers tend to offer higher wage to the graduates, who are considered to be much capable to fulfill the posts. By those common values, universities indeed have the obligation to satisfy the vocational demand both from students and employers.

Moreover, one of the important missions of education is to equip students with the employment skills. The working period takes a major proportion in our life. Besides, the academic knowledge without any practical use is a mere abstraction, which is totally worthless. Therefore, colleges should evaluate the curriculum and integrate some technical elements into the theoretical field. It not only can promote the practical use of their courses but enhance students’ enthusiasm for learning as well.

All in all, university education is essential to our society. The authorities should spare no effects to devise a well-rounded curriculum so as to catch up with the diverse learning needs.
