Apple countered concerns that the best years of smartphone growth were behind it, as iPhone sales beat expectations, despite a sharp drop in third-quarter earnings.
The company most closely associated with the industry's shift from PCs to mobile devices said that price cuts to its two-year-old iPhone 4 and better distribution in developing markets had helped it fend off competition from Samsung's Galaxy S4 and cheaper smartphones.
Sales of 31.2m iPhones in the quarter ended in June, up 20 per cent over the previous year, comfortably outstripped analysts' consensus of around 27m units.
"I don't subscribe to the common view that the higher-end smartphone market has hit its peak," Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, said.
