Men who father daughters are more generous in the workplace and pay higher wages, according to new research.

A study has found that the presence of a daughter - regardless of age - brings out a man's more caring side.

The study aimed to understand why some wealthy men are more generous than others. Some billionaires are renowned for giving away vast sums of money - Bill Gates, for example, has given away £18 billion in charitable gifts – while others do not donate any money at all.

Researchers at Aalborg University in Denmark, the University of Maryland and Columbia Business School in the U.S. examined generosity and what inspires it in wealthy men, according to a report in the New York Times.

They analysed the amount chief executives paid their employees rather than large-scale charitable giving however.

The researchers tracked the wages that male chief executives at more than 10,000 Danish companies paid their employees over the course of a decade.

On average, after chief executives had a child, they paid about £65 less in annual compensation per employee.

The researchers wrote that it was common for male chief executives to 'claim a firm’s resources for themselves and their growing family, at the expense of their employees'.

But when Professor Michael Dahl’s team examined the data more closely, the changes in pay depended on the gender of the child that the chief executives fathered.

They reduced wages after having a son, but not after having a daughter.

Scientists have hypothesised that daughters, compared to sons, bring out a father’s caretaking tendencies - that as a man brushes their daughters’ hair or play dolls with them, they become kinder.

Previous studies have shown that American legislators with daughters vote more liberally.

This is also true of British male voters who have daughters, especially in terms of referendum and policy choices about reproductive rights.

For male chief executives, this daughter-driven increase in empathy may account for more generous impulses toward employees that reduce the temptation toward wage cuts.
