Thanks for coming to class today! Let's start with some slang.

We have two that both use the word "cut". But there are no scissors involved in either of these meanings.

One is called "cut it out", and the other one is "not cut out for this".
一個叫做“cut it out”,另外一個叫“not cut out for this”。

Let’s talk about cutting something out.
讓我們討論cut it out。

When you say, "Please, Alex, cut it out". You are asking Alex to stop doing something.
當(dāng)你說,“Alex,請你cut it out”。

Basically when you say "cut it out", you don't like what someone is doing.

They might not be prepared or capable of completing the job they are doing.

What I like to think of is "cut it out" means to cut your behavior off, so that you can’t keep going, it’s stopped.

Meanwhile, "not cut out for this" means you are not prepared for something, or you are not really the kind of person who should be doing the job.
它的意思是你沒有準(zhǔn)備好去做一件事情,“Not cut out for this”或者你不屬于應(yīng)該去做這件事的人群。

For example, if you’ve never sung or danced a day in your life and Lady Gaga asked you to perform with her, then you could say, "Sorry, but I'm not cut out for this".

What I'd like to think of is a piece of paper and if you cut out a certain shape that shape is good for doing something.

When you are trying to complete a certain task you might need paper that of a certain shape. Other shapes of paper won’t work.

So that’s what I think of when I think of the slang "cut out for this".
所以這就是當(dāng)我遇到俚語“cut out for this”時想到的。

You need the right shape or the right person for a task.

The ways to use those slangs are different.

The first one, “cut it out”, is a command.
“Cut it out”是一個命令。

You are asking someone to cut it out, or saying you wish someone would do this.
當(dāng)你告訴一個人“cut it out”.

You wish they would stop doing what they are doing.

The second one, "not cut out for this" is a description.
“Not cut out for this”是一個描述方式。

You are saying a person is not cut out for this or even a thing is not cut out for the task you are trying to accomplish.

So you can say, "I am not cut out for this job"or "Thomas is not cut out to be a waiter because he hates taking orders from people"

Our sentence structure for today has a funny example. See if you can catch the structure "The greater the number of people who want to go to the show the more tickets we are going to have to print".

The greater the number of A, the more B will occur.

Here’s another example "The greater the effort, the better the sense of accomplishment at the end of a task".

So you are saying that the more you have of A, the more you will have of B.

One more example"The greater the size of a car, the more gas is necessary to get around".

Why don't you try making a sentence of your own with this structure?

Thank you for coming to class today.I hope you learned something and I hope you had fun.
