14 people are being treated at local hospitals after a fire at a farm produce market in Shanghai Sunday night that killed five people.

When ICS arrived this afternoon, smoke was still coming out of the building, as investigators looked for clues to how the fire started.

The blaze broke out around 8:30 last night at the 20,000-square-meter market, spread over about 4,000 square meters and damaged 117 stalls that sold mostly dried foods. The market was closed when the fire began, and stall owners had pulled down their metal shutters. Some market workers who wouldn’t go on camera told ICS that many people live on the second floor, although market managers had said people should not live in their own stalls.

57-year-old Zhu Mingxia and her family were living in one of the burned-out stalls, and were trapped in the fire. Her nephew says they had to live there because of their business.

Li Xiang, Zhu Mingxia's nephew, said," They need to go to sleep early, because they need to get up at midnight to get in stock. So they pulled down their shutter and went to sleep early last night. I was told that one of her sons-in-law saw the fire and tried to get the shutter open, and he pulled from the outside and they kicked from the inside to finally get them out."

Zhu has burns over 85 percent of her body, and her nine-year-old granddaughter has burns over nearly half of her body. Zhu’s husband, daughter-in-law, and an eight-year-old son are all being treated at Changhai hospital in northern Shanghai’s Yangpu District.

Zhu Shihui, deputy director of Changhai Hospital Burn Dept., said," At this early stage we are giving Mrs. Zhu infusions and blood transfusions. We are preventing her from going into shock. After 48 hours, we need to watch out for infection. Zhu needs a whole body skin-graft. As for the two kids, the girl’s right hand will need a skin-graft. The boy’s legs are badly burned, but we need further assessment to see whether he needs a skin-graft."

Nearly 60 fire engines responded to the blaze, and it took firefighters an hour to put out the fire.
