Where am I? Taylor Swift wakes up abandoned in the middle of a desert in the opening of her new music video I Knew You Were Trouble.

She says the video is meant to depict a girl who changes everything about herself as she's falling in love.

And Taylor Swift seems to have jumped right into character to film the music video for her new single I Knew You Were Trouble. The star, who turned 23 on Thursday, sports hot pink hair and an edgier style that's a marked departure from her usual good girl persona.

The nearly six-minute clip opens with Taylor waking up in a desert littered with trash from a rave that went into the early hours of the morning.

'I knew his world moved too fast and burned too bright, but I just thought, "How can the devil be pulling you toward someone who looks so much like an angel when he smiles at you?" Maybe he knew that when he saw me. I guess I just lost my balance. I think that the worst part of it all wasn't losing him. It was losing me.'

'I don't know if you know who you are until you lose who you are,' she muses at the end of the clip, dropping a necklace he gave her.
