The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is an upcoming 2012 epic fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson. It will be the first of a three-part film adaptation of the novel The Hobbit (1937) by J. R. R. Tolkien, followed by The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and There and Back Again (2014).

Set in Middle-earth, the story is about the hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), hired by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to accompany 13 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from Smaug the dragon. The film is scheduled to be theatrically released on December 14, 2012.
