It was a thrill a minute at the Yas Marina Circuit in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday for Formula One’s 18th race of the 20 event season. Kimi Raikkonen won an incident-packed Abu Dhabi Grand Prix his first victory since returning from retirement this year and it was a first win for Lotus since 1987.

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton led the field from pole position in what would turn out to be one of the most dramatic races of 2012. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso quickly jumped into second overtaking Red Bull’s Mark Webber who blew the start. Sebastien Vettel, meanwhile, was disqualified from the grid and had to start from pit lane behind the field. He was trying to pick his way through the back markers and was clipped by one of the Renaults, forcing an early pit stop for the two-time champion to replace a front wing.

On Lap 20, Hamilton, in the lead, suddenly ground to a halt, his McLaren suffering a loss of electrical power - it was Hamilton’s fourth retirement of a frustratingly up-and-down season. Webber’s troubles continued on lap 38 - Paul di Resta’s Force India, spun into the path of Romain Grosjean who caught Webber, putting them both out of the race.

With three laps to go, Vettel passed Jenson Button and moved into third place, but there was no time to catch the front two and his hopes of a fifth straight race win were over. Raikkonen took the chequered flag to become the first driver in a Lotus car to win a Formula One race since Ayrton Senna in 1987. Alonso and Vettel took the minor placings. Vettel now has only a 10 point lead over Alonso’s for the crown with two races remaining.
