McDonald's has turned the London Summer Olympics into a no-fry zone - unless they are McDonald's fries.

The American burger chain is the only restaurant allowed to sell French fries at the upcoming Summer Games, according to the sponsorship deal it inked with Olympics organizers.

The games' 800 other food vendors are shut out from selling the greasy little spuds, called "chips" in Britain, unless they are served as part of a fish and chips combo, the Telegraph reported.

Though the deal safeguards Britain's favorite takeaway snack, some Londoners aren't loving the burger chain's French fry monopoly.

"Apparently, McDonald's are so terrified of off-brand chips that they will only let you buy them as part of a British Heritage Ye Olde Fishe and Chippes package. Heaven forfend you should try to ask for just the chips," wrote Telegraph editor Tom Chivers in a blog post about the deal.

It's not the first time a restaurant has locked down the rights to a single foodstuff at a sporting event.

Earlier this year, Nolita hero shop Parm was barred from selling its delicious Torrisi turkey sandwiches at Yankee Stadium after deli big Boar's Head complained that it was the stadium's official turkey provider, foodie blog Eater reported.

The selection of McDonald's as the Summer Games' official restaurant has come under fire from critics who blame the chain's Quarter Pounders, fries and shakes for ballooning obesity rates in the U.K.

Health advocates were particularly worried about McDonald's’ plan to open its largest-ever restaurant at Olympic Park - a 1,500-seat behemoth that is expected to sling some 50,000 Big Macs a day.

The location, one of four at the park, is temporary and will be taken down after the Games.
