President Barack Obama is calling private sector job growth a step in the right direction, but he says the economy needs to grow faster. That after the government reported only 80,000 jobs were created last month. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told reporters Friday that President Obama must take responsibility for failed economic policies.

George Zimmerman was released from jail Friday for a second time while he awaits his second-degree murder trial for fatally shooting Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman was granted a $1 million bail with strict conditions, including electronic monitoring.

The Pentagon is cheering the defection of a Syrian general, once a member of President Bashar Assad's inner circle. U.S. officials are expressing hope that it will lead to more high-level cracks in Assad's regime.

A record-setting heat is gripping the Midwest and the mid-Atlantic region. Many cities are trying to help by opening cooling centers and extending the hours for their public pools.
