句中出現(xiàn)了兩個(gè)有意思的短語:down in the dumps和pull oneself together。一起來看看它們的含義和用法吧:

down in the dumps

這個(gè)短語的意思是“悶悶不樂”“心情低落”,在句中可以和be、feel等系動(dòng)詞連用。例如:

Some people tend to crave the sweet stuff when they feel down in the dumps.
有些人心情低落時(shí)會(huì)抑制不住地想吃甜食。

"Potential employers or connections aren't going to bring on people who are down in the dumps just to make them feel better, " says Glickman.
格利克曼說,潛在雇主或社交網(wǎng)絡(luò)朋友不會(huì)為了讓人好受點(diǎn)就去提挈那些垂頭喪氣的人。

意思相近的短語還有be/fall in low spirits; be in blue; be in a blue mood等。例如 :

The baseball team was in low spirits as they returned from the defeat.

I'll read my grandfather's letters carefully when I miss my family very much, when I'm in a blue mood, and when I'm frustrated.

He immediately pulled himself together, glancing round in fear of anyone found him.
他很快定下神來,向周圍瞥了一眼,生怕有人發(fā)現(xiàn)他。

表示“振作起來”的詞組還有pull up one's slacks和snap out of it,例如:

It seems nobody can pull up his slacks after his wife's death.
他的妻子去世以后,似乎沒有人能使他振作起來。

Even if you were wasting time all the years before, you can still snap out of it and begin a new life now.
就算你之前幾年都在荒廢時(shí)間,現(xiàn)在你仍然可以振作起來,開始新的生活。

還有比較簡(jiǎn)單的cheer (somebody) up:

He encouraged the family to cheer up after the earthquake.
