Sweden's most prestigious musical awards, the "Polar Prize", revealed its 2012 winners in Stockholm on Tuesday. Legendary singer-songwriter Paul Simon and cellist Yo-Yo Ma were confirmed to be the recipients of this year’s Polar Prize, which is presented annually to both a pop act and a classical performer.
The Polar Prize is founded by Stig Anderson, the publisher, lyricist and manager of Sweden’s national treasure ABBA. The Polar Prize awards two laureates each year in recognition of exceptional achievements in the creation and advancement of music.
This year the award committee hails Yo-Yo Ma as the "leading cellist of our time", and the prize is for him as a musician, although he is praised for his many different achievements, such as the nonprofit arts and educational organization Silk Road Project,
Yo-Yo Ma, recipient, said, "One of the things that is probably either incredibly comforting, or incredibly annoying about my life is that no two days are alike, I have yet to be able to find a way to say 'this is what I do, and I do this in the morning,' because the demands of both traveling where you're never in control, and having a family life where, basically, you're never in control, you're always trying to find an equilibrium."
Paul Simon was awarded the prize for his skills as a world-class songwriter with innovative arrangements and provocative lyrics.
Alfons Karabuda, chairman of Polar Music Prize Award Committee, said, "Paul Simon was awarded because of his ability to really be a perfectionist, you know in detail of the music that he has done. He's polishing his music until it's a bright diamond but he's also open for any influence and to coincidence which is quite remarkable."
Simon shot to fame in the 1960s as half of the "Simon and Garfunkel" duo, and after the group split, Simon embarked on a successful solo career.
Previous recipients of the Polar Music Prize include Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Ravi Shankar, Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd.
