The White House has said it will not negotiate with al-Qaeda over a US hostage being held by the militant group.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said at a daily briefing on Monday that the US government will continue making every effort to see Warren Weinstein released safely to his family, but it cannot and will not negotiate with al-Qaeda.

Weinstein appeared in a video released on Sunday, urging President Obama to save his life by agreeing to al-Qaeda’s demands. Weinstein, a 70-year-old aid worker for U.S. Agency for International Development, was abducted last August in Pakistan.

In December, Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri said the group was responsible for the abduction. He demanded the release of all those in US detention for ties to Taliban.
