Building a better city
The high cost of construction make hosting the Olympics risky. Therefore, cities need to plan for what they will do with Olympic facilities after the games.

Using temporary venues is a good way to aviod empty stadiums after the Olympics. These facilities are either taken down?after the games or used for other things. The Olympic Fencing Hall in Beijing will become a convention center. Other temporary venues include parks, baseball diamonds and roads used for races.

Another way to cut cost?is to use existing venues. Instead of building new stadiums, some cities improve older ones. The 2008 Olympic Games will use 11 existing facilities. One of them, Olympic Sports Centre, held the 11th Asian Games in 1990. Freshly renovated, the stadium will be the site of the Modern Pentathlon at the Olympics.

A successful Olympics is about more than producing an exciting athletic competition. It is also about building a better city for the people who live there.
