To mark the sinking of the Titanic a century ago, a memorial cruise has left New York with passengers who have long been obsessed with the doomed ocean liner and some relatives of the Titanic’s victims.

A journey to remember a tragic voyage - On Tuesday, the memorial ship of the Titanic, left its pier on New York’s West Side, on a journey to visit the spot where the Titanic sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean a century ago.

On board are the relatives of victims who were on the Titanic, many of whom were very emotional.

Sharon Lee Willing, great-granddaughter of Titanic passengers, said, "It’s going to be very poignant and emotional for me to be right there at the site of where this ship went down, and I know it’s going to just look like water - and is, of course - but to think of that great ship down there it’s tearful. It’s going to be kind of tough, I think."

The ship is also packed with historyaficionados, who have long been obsessed with the doomed ocean liner. Quite a few are wearing suits and wide-brimmed hats.

Dan Castaneda, passenger from California, said, "We decided to come to this journey. It’s a once in a lifetime thing. We wanted to come on out to also pay our respects, but also look and maybe feel something about that Titanic episode that had happened way long ago."

The cruise ship Journey, operated by Azamara Club Cruises was carrying 440 passengers when it departed on Tuesday evening - 100 years to the day the Titanic left Southampton, England.

Along the way, passengers will listen to lectures about life on board the Titanic and dine at a costume-themed dinner. Ticket prices dropped in recent weeks from about five-thousand US dollars per person to a thousand US dollars per person.

After stopping in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where more than 100 Titanic victims are buried, the cruise will continue on to conduct a memorial service at the spot in the Atlantic Ocean where the Titanic sank.
