Katie: He’s been underwater a long time. He must be in trouble.
Grace: Oh, no.
Mark: The lifeguard saw him fall. He’s swimming out to save him.
Grace: Oh, no. this is all my fault.
Mark: Dan didn’t ask you if he could surf, Grace. He just did it.
Katie: Oh, I hope he’s OK!

Conversation B
(The lifeguard helps Dan out of the water.)
Grace: Dan, are you OK?
Dan: Yes, I’m fine, Grace. I’m not hurt.
Grace: Thank goodness. You’re lucky. You should never surf by yourself.
Katie: Here’s a towel.
Dan: Thanks.
Grace: What’s wrong with you, Daniel Thomas?
Dan: I’m sorry, Grace---
Mark: Why did you go surfing? You didn’t ask for Grace’s permission! You can’t just do anything you want!
Grace: That’s enough Mark!

Conversation C
Dan: I’m sorry, Grace.
Grace: You should be! You just failed this assignment! Get your stuff together. We’re leaving. (leaves)
Mark: Thanks a lot, Dan.
Dan: I’m sorry, Mark. You don’t deserve a bad grade. I’ll talk to her.
Mark: No, you won’t. you only care about yourself. (leaves)
Dan: Great. Everyone is mad at me.
Katie: I’m not. But you’d better be nice to me. Right now, I’m the only friend you’ve got!
