Researchers in Stockholm have shown that chocolate might lower the likelihood of strokes in women by as much as 20 percent. Further studies must still be carried out, but it seems that eating reasonable amounts of the sweet treat might actually do you some good.

Fresh chocolates rolling off the production line and still warm. It's enough to make your mouth water.

These candies are often thought to contribute towards an unhealthy diet - but research being carried out in Sweden could change all that.

In a survey conducted to understand eating habits of some 33-thousand women between the age of 49 and 83,

researchers found the occurrences of strokes were significantly higher among the women who consumed no chocolate. They also found that the more chocolate the women ate the less likely they were to have a stroke.

In the group that ate the most chocolate, over 66 grams a week, the risk of stroke was reduced by 20 per cent.

Susanna Larsson, associate prof. of Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, said, "We believe it is because of the flavonoids in the pure cocoa. These flavonoids are a type of polyphenol that acts as an antioxidant and they decrease the risk of oxidation of cholesterol, which is a culprit to cause stroke. We have also seen that the consumption of chocolate lowers blood pressure, which is a strong risk factor when it comes to stroke. "

At a chocolate factory in Stockholm several kilos of chocolate are sold every day. The owner of the Chocolate factory and theadjacent cafe has her own theory as to why Chocolate appears to be beneficial to people's health.

Ellinor Isaksson, owner of chocolate factory, said, "We have always know that chocolate makes you happy. And when you are happy, you are also healthy."

So when can we expect to be told to eat more chocolate? Not any time soon according to expert Larsson. Because more studies involving different populations and men have yet to be done.
