You're right. It was designed by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, but the interior framework was designed by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, also designer of the Eiffel Tower.
So, it was an entirely French project, then?
Not entirely, the pedestal was designed by an American architect, Richard Morris Hunt. But many people on both sides of the Atlantic put money into her construction.
Perhaps it is fitting that hundreds of thousands of ordinary people contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to her construction and that millions more contributed millions of dollars to ensure her continued existence.
Yes, she may have been created by the genius of a few visionaries, but the concept she represents speaks to the hearts and minds of ordinary men and women everywhere.
I hope that one day I can visit the museum at her base and see her for real.
