Al Qaeda has a new leader. That's according to a statement on an Islamist website published today. It says Ayman al-Zawahri, Osama bin-Laden's long-time lieutenant, has now taken full command of the group's operations. Zawahri, who has long been viewed as bin-Laden's most likely successor, vowed earlier this month to press ahead with al-Qaeda's campaign against the US and its allies. It was his first public response to the U.S. commando raid in Pakistan last month, in which bin-Laden was killed. Believed to be in his late 50s, Zawahri met bin-Laden in Pakistan in the mid-1980s, while helping guerrillas fight the Soviet troops in Afghanistan. He now tops Washington's most-wanted list, with a 25-million U.S.-dollar bounty.
