Kick the bucket

這是英國俚語,其表面意思是踢掉水桶或踢倒屠宰架,通常用于比喻死亡或壽終正寢。

Those guys are just waiting for their old man to kick the bucket so they can get his money.

那些不孝的兒女正在等待他們的老子一命嗚呼以便瓜分他的財產(chǎn)。

I’m not at all surprised that he finally kicked the bucket. He was not in very good health.

他最終去世了,對此我并不感到意外,因?yàn)樗纳眢w一直都不怎么好。

Kick up one’s heels.

踢腳后跟,通常用來比喻休閑、放松,引申的意思是指慶祝活動或者玩?zhèn)€痛快。

After these exams, I intend to kick up my heels a bit.

考完試后我想玩一玩。

He had no time to take a holiday and kick up his heels when he came back from the war.

當(dāng)他從戰(zhàn)場上歸來時,甚至沒有時間去休假去休假或慶祝一番。

Kick the habit:

戒除惡習(xí),那可是件令人happy的事。habit本來是指“習(xí)慣”,但在這一習(xí)語中加上了定冠詞變成了“惡習(xí)”的意思。Kick的意思是“踢”,“踢掉惡習(xí)”就是“完全戒除”。

I’d like to quit smoking, but I just can’t kick the habit.

我不想再吸煙,可是怎么也沒能完全戒除惡習(xí)。

有時把具體惡習(xí)的詞語放在habit前面,如kick the drug habit.

Once Carl kicked the drug habit, he became a model citizen.

Carl戒掉吸毒的惡習(xí)之后就變成了一個模范公民了。

如以上所講,這種表達(dá)法一般用于“對身體健康有害的惡習(xí)”,但有時也用于其它的惡習(xí):

I think my brother has finally kicked the gambling habit.

我想我哥哥總算完全戒除賭博的惡習(xí)啦。

這一表達(dá)法還用于戲謔的場合:

I really can’t afford to date so many girls, but it’s tough to kick the habit.

跟那么多的姑娘約會我承受不起,不過惡習(xí)難改啊。
