ent/on behalf of/stand for

(1)represent用來表示“代表某人/某個(gè)團(tuán)體/政府等”“某種標(biāo)志代表什么”“某物(書、雕塑等)表現(xiàn)的是什么”和“把某人/物描繪成什么”。

(2)on behalf of只能用做狀語，表示“代表/代替某人”。

(3)stand for往往用來表示“(字母、數(shù)字、符號(hào)等)代表/象征什么”。

2. protect/defend/guard

(3)guard強(qiáng)調(diào)通過看守警戒，以確保安全。

3. likely/probable/possible

(1)likely 強(qiáng)調(diào)表面上看來有可能，與 probable 意思接近，有時(shí)可以互換，但 likely 常暗示從表面跡象來判斷。常用句型：

①Sth./Sb. be likely to do...

②It is likely that...

(2)probable 表示有幾分根據(jù)的推測(cè)，比 possible 表示的可能性大。換句話說，probable的“有可能”，是指有實(shí)際的依據(jù)或邏輯上合乎情理。

常用句型：It is probable that...

(3)possible 表示客觀上潛在的可能性，也許實(shí)際發(fā)生的可能性并不大。

常用句型：

①It is possible (for sb.) to do sth.

②It is possible that...

③sth. is possible

④as quickly/much/soon...as possible
