STOCKHOLM, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Ericsson and Sony Corporation Thursday said that Sony will acquire Ericsson's 50 percent stake in Sony Ericsson, "making the mobile handset business a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony."
"Ericsson will receive 1.05 billion euro (1.47 billion U.S. dollars) cash payment," the Sweden-based world telecommunication giant Ericsson said in a statement in Stockholm.
Sir Howard Stringer, Sony's Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President, said the "acquisition makes sense for Sony and Ericsson, and it will make the difference for consumers."
His counterpart in Ericsson Hans Vestberg echoed the argument saying that "today we take an equally logical step."
When Sony Ericsson formed the joint venture in 2001, it combined the unprofitable handset operations from Ericsson and Sony and became sixth-biggest player in the global market.
During its 10 years of operation, Sony Ericsson has generated approximately 1.5 billion euros (2.1 billion dollars) of profit and paid dividends totaling about 1.9 billion euros (2.7 billion dollars) to its parent companies.
However, the Japanese-Swedish group announced that its pre-tax income dropped by half during the third quarter this year compared to the same period last year, according to a company statement issued this month.
The transaction is expected to close in January 2012, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.
