6. So we've just talked about, your school is also face to Chinese students, not only the international students, why do you think it’s important to do so?

You mean why it’s most important to be working with Chinese students?

If you are going to study in the west environment, they have to prepare for it. For instance, if you go to a Chinese public school, and Chinese public schools at all, they do a very very good job in preparing students for Chinese university. Canadian and Western high schools do not prepare them to go to a Chinese university; in the same way, Chinese high schools don’t prepare them to go to a western university. Sure, they may get marks in the high school, and they write niles in the TOEFL, and they make it at 6.5. and I answer TOEFL is only a test. It’s not indicator of success. We have many students come out of Chinese public schools, and yes, they will do very well at university, get high marks, but what I hear from them and I hear from university representatives that kids will complain “I have no Canadian friends. All my friends are Chinese because I haven’t had opportunities when I was in public school to interact with foreigners. So I really don’t know how. ” and when it comes into interacting with professor, they don’t know how to do that either. In Canada and other Western places, students also have the opportunities to work while they got to the university and afterwards. And I’ve been told by employers that what happens to students in Chinese public high schools, although they may have very good marks, they do very poor at interviews. So they fear to interact with foreigners. We say kids come here at school like ours are likely to have it.You know what’s basically is that we have almost? 54 foreign teachers at our school, Canadian teachers. So they are interacting all day with foreigners and they get so used to it. I have kids coming into my office, say “hi, open up my candy jugs.”I keep the candy jugs in my office. It’s a community of candies to talk about it.

That’s funny.

7. That’s the biggest advantage for students who go to the international high school also is going to be like the biggest problem for them first in run the school, like for kids who have been taught in Chinese public schools for last 12 years, and then they get into the international school. How they are going to face the first problem?

We do best stages like it depends a lot on students’ English level. If students have very good English, they can get ready to international program or Canadian program. If their English level is low, they are going to the foundation program. Once you get into the British Columbia program, our teachers are used to teaching Chinese kids, in all-years kids. Then they realized that every one of them is a second-language learner. So we need to take it slow and we need to gradually warm up. We are trying to get kids involved. First when you walk into a classroom, students say very little. So you do all kinds of things to break the ice and get kids involved. We have some really exceptional kids in our school turn out to be student leaders who also take a lot of things to get students involved. We have so many activities after school. We have all the traditional sports including hockey. We also have all kinds of clubs, yoga clubs; we have reading clubs, we have yoga clubs, we have horse-riding clubs, so something there for everybody. It doesn’t matter what kind students you are.

So can we say like students in your school, they basically get involved in a pure English environment?

That’s right. And in fact, from 7:50 in the morning to 2:40 in the afternoon, they only talk to foreigners. English is the only language it’s used. So they are really immerged to it.

Can we like after 6 years like the training there, they can basically speak fluent English?

Oh, yeah, in fact the exams they have to do in grade 10, there are 3 exams, one in grade 11, and in grade 12, they have been passed for 5 exams. But they are exactly the same exams they do in Canada, identical exams. What was amazing was last year, we outperformed other off-shore BC schools in China, but we also outperformed the BC schools back in Canada. So we’re really proud of our kids.
