A red roof and white walls are typical features of eastern architecture. However in Tallinn of Estonia, the panorama is more than a quiet town, but rather, is highlighted by huge cruise ships.
Up to six ferries stop at the port every day, bringing millions of tourists to the city each year. It's a result of the Baltic state finding new ways to market itself.
The tourism sector in Estonia is experiencing its most rapid growth ever. During the first six months of 2011, 1.2 million guests were registered as overnighters, that's the highest amount of tourists staying in the country in the history of Estonia. There's a reason for that. The Estonian tourism board has spent more than 5 million euros per year on advertising.
Tarmo Mutso, director of Estonia's Tourism Board, said, "In the marketing of Estonia we use four main values. The first one is a vacation in the old town, the second is a health vacation, the third one is nature and the fourth is culture. These are the values that we have to make Estonia known for."
Tallinn Airport has become one of the fastest growing airports in Europe, and has much to do with its cheap prices. That's also what Estonia is attracting visitors with, high quality at comparatively low prices in Europe. And for most of the tourists, it's a new and unseen country.
Travelers from Finland and Russia are Estonia's most frequent.
Ruslan Baranov, tourist from Russia, said, "We live in Saint Petersburg and it's very close. We chose a place that we can spend a couple of days."
According to Estonian Tourism Board, tourism provides approximately 9 percent of the country's GDP.
