Portrait of the Mogul as a Young Man

Born in 1931 in Melbourne, Keith Rupert Murdoch was named for his father Sir Keith Murdoch, a celebrated journalist who later became a newspaper executive. When Murdoch was 22, his father died, prompting the son to return to Australia from the U.K. (where he had been studying at Oxford University) and take over the family business. Beginning with a newspaper in Adelaide, Murdoch built a network of properties in Australia, including purchasing outlets like Sydney tabloid the Daily Mirror, which the young tycoon shows off to a photographer in this photo, taken in 1960.

Growth

In the late 1960s, Murdoch began to buy properties in the U.K., beginning with the News of the World in 1968. The following year, he would acquire the Sun. Here, he smiles at a press conference in which he outlined his plans for the News of the World.

Expansion in the U.K.

In the U.K., Murdoch did not confine himself to tabloids. In 1981 he gained control of the financially strapped but prestigious London Times, along with the Sunday Times, from a Canadian newspaper publisher, Lord Thomson of Fleet. Here, Murdoch is photographed during that year's negotiations with print unions.

In the U.S.A.

Murdoch's first property in the U.S. came with his purchase of the San Antonio Express and News in 1973, followed by the New York Post in 1976. His acquisition of the Post, a well-regarded liberal newspaper at the time, surprised many in the publishing world. Here, Murdoch, left, meets with senior editors at the Post in the wake of a 1978 citywide press strike, when employees at the paper reached an agreement with management before their crosstown rivals.

Lights, Camera, Hollywood

In 1985 Murdoch expanded his presence in the U.S. by acquiring 20th Century Fox. He went on to purchase six television stations, which would ultimately form the foundation of Fox Broadcasting Co., the first network to be launched in the U.S. since the big three — CBS, NBC and ABC — began to appear in American living rooms in the 1950s. In order to conform to the legal requirement that U.S. television stations be owned only by American citizens, Murdoch obtained U.S. citizenship in 1985.

Headquarters

Murdoch, frustrated by Australian regulations that he believed placed too many limits on News Corp., moved the company's headquarters to New York City in 2004.

Strategy Is a Strength

In 2007 Murdoch made an unsolicited $5 billion offer to buy Dow Jones, publisher of the Wall Street Journal. The offer unleashed a debate in the U.S., with media watchers worrying that the Australian tycoon would impose his political views and sensationalist tactics on one of the most respected brands in American journalism. Initially, the Bancroft family, which held controlling interest in Dow Jones, declined, saying it opposed Murdoch's management methods. But he did not give up, and ultimately completed the deal.

Rupert Murdoch 12

Heir Apparent

Murdoch's oldest son, Lachlan, was widely thought to be the inheritor of the empire until Lachlan's resignation from his executive posts with News Corp. in 2005. That left Murdoch's son James, pictured above, to be the next in line to helm the company.

Scandal

In 2011 the News of the World came under fire for allegations of phone hacking and police bribery. Rebekah Brooks, considered to be Murdoch's most loyal lieutenant and editor of the News of the World, was arrested on July 17, 2011, in connection with the police investigations.
