A Canadian judge upheld the deportation on Thursday of one of China’s most wanted fugitives, calling him a “common criminal.”
加拿大法官周四支持將被中國(guó)通緝逃亡加拿大的通緝犯賴昌星遣送回國(guó)的決定，稱其為“普通罪犯”。

The suspect, Lai Changxing, could be returned to China as early as Saturday, said Helen Park, the government’s lawyer.

Mr. Lai’s lawyer, David Matas, had asked Canada’s Federal Court to stay his client’s deportation, arguing he would not get a fair trial in his native country.

Mr. Lai, who is accused of masterminding a huge smuggling operation that robbed the Chinese government of millions of dollars in unpaid taxes, has been fighting his deportation to China for 12 years. He has long maintained that he could be tortured or killed if he were returned to his home country.

Chinese officials have assured Canada that Mr. Lai would not be executed or tortured and would get a fair trial with access to a lawyer if he is returned to face charges.

背景新聞：加拿大《環(huán)球華報(bào)》總編輯黃運(yùn)榮在接受中新網(wǎng)記者采訪時(shí)介紹，賴昌星是當(dāng)?shù)貢r(shí)間本月7日被加拿大邊境服務(wù)局拘捕的。20日，加拿大移民暨難民局對(duì)賴昌星拘留7天后聆訊做出判決結(jié)果，以羈押理由不充分，裁決賴昌星獲有條件保釋。21日，加拿大聯(lián)邦法庭開始聆訊賴昌星遣返案，審理賴昌星提出延緩遣返的要求。

賴昌星與家人1999年8月13日以旅游身份進(jìn)入加拿大。2000年3月旅游簽證到期，加拿大發(fā)出有條件離境令。同年6月，賴昌星夫婦提出所謂“難民”申請(qǐng)，但一直遭加拿大政府拒絕。
