Since 1904,
trams have been running from East to West of Hong Kong Island. Over the last century, Hong Kong Tramways, Limited witnessed the development of Hong Kong, and the tram remains an efficient and extremely economical mode of public transport in Hong Kong. Today, Hong Kong Tramways owns and operates a
fleet of 163
tramcars, including two antique tramcars, carrying a daily average of 230,000 passengers. It is the world's largest fleet of
double-deck tramcars still in service.
The tramcars were all single-deck, of which 10 tramcars were designed for first-class passengers and the others were for third-class passengers. The first-class compartment was
enclosed in the centre with two long benches on both either side and both the front and back ends were open. Seating capacity was for 32 passengers. The third-class tramcars were open-sided with six sets of benches running crossways, back to back, seating 48 passengers.
Tram fares for the first and the third class were 10 cents and 5 cents respectively. Initially, the company planned to divide the trams into three classes, but
subsequently only the first and the third class were chosen for ease of operation.
The Conductor system was introduced in the early days of tram service. Two conductors would be stationed at each tram for selling tickets on the upper and lower decks. In 1976, drop-in coin-boxes were installed on the trams. Conductors were no longer needed and most of them were trained to become motormen. The Conductor system was finally abolished in 1982.
Nowadays, passengers can either use an octopus card or place the coins into the drop-in box upon leaving the tram. It charges the same fare for upper and lower deck. Senior citizens and children can enjoy a lower fare at HK$1.00.
Rotating turnstiles were fitted at the entrance, which was located at the rear of a tram.
