1970 was World Conservation (保護(hù)) Year. The United Nations wanted everyone to know that the world is in dan?ger. They hoped that govemment(政府) would act quickly to conserve nature (保護(hù)自然) . Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1, 300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland but now only 866 remain. The others have been destroyed(毀壞 )by modern man and his technolo?gy (技術(shù)). We are changing the earth, the air, water and eve?rything that grows and lives. We can’t live without these things. If things go like this, we shall destroy ourselves.
What will happen in the future? Perhaps it is more im?portant to ask: "What, must we do now?"The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of to?day. A lot of them know conservation is necessary. Many are helping to save our world. They plant trees, build bridges across rivers in forests, and so on. In a small town in the Li?nited States, a large number of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometres of their river. Young people may hear about con?servation through a record called"No one' s going to change our world "It was made by the Beatles, Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve ani?mals.

Life in the 21st century will be different from life in the 20th century, because many changes will take place in the new century, but what will the changes be?
The population is growing fast. There will be more and more people in the world and most of them will live longer than before. Computers will be much smaller and more use?ful, and there will be at least one in every home. And computer studies will be one of the important subjects in school.
People will work fewer hours than they did in the 20th century, and they will have more free time for sports, watching TV and travelling. Travelling will be much cheaper and easier. And many more people will go to other countries for holidays.
There will be changes in our food, too. More land will be used for building new towns and houses. Then there will be less room for cows and sheep, so meat will be more ex?pensive. Maybe no one will eat it every day, instead they eat more vegetables and fruit. Maybe people will be healthier.
Work in the future will be different, too. Dangerous and hard work will be done by robots(機(jī)器人). Because of this, many people will not have enough work to do. This will be a problem.
