The current annual interest rate for savings accounts is 3.25 percent. Many financial products promise higher rates for customers. Manager Li Ping from China Merchants Bank based in Beijing says with increased demand for such products, many commercial banks like his have added more types of financial services.
"By the end of this May, China Merchants Bank had launched more than 300 types of financial products in the market in total, doubled the amount during the same time last year. In Beijing alone, the bank has collected more than 110 billion yuan from such products compared to 30 billion yuan last May."
But why has the popularity of such financial products grown recently? Experts say the high inflation level is the trigger. CPI growth in May reached 5.5 percent compared to the same time last year, while the current interest rate for savings account was only 3.25 percent. Many people worry that their assets are shrinking quickly.
Usually, long-term investment products attract more customers. But now, more people prefer shorter-term ones because the interest rates of long-term investments are not increasing along with the basic interest rate.
Professor He Qiang from the Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing says many people now expect to get higher yields from short-term investments.
"If I were a bank customer, I would also choose this type of investment. Why? The profit returns may be higher than those of savings accounts; plus, the reality now is our society is actually experiencing a negative interest rate. So then why not chooses a better way of managing our assets?"
In order to reduce the high liquidity in the domestic market, the central bank of China has continuously raised the reserve rate ratio since last year. Manager Li Ping of China Merchants Bank says selling more financial products to customers is also a direct method for commercial banks to ensure adequate capital reserves.
"If the commercial banks only rely on traditional services like absorbing deposits or selling national bonds, then it's far from enough for them to make a profit. Offering more financial products is the best way for us to enlarge our market share and make high profits."
Most of the newly released short-term financial products are shorter than two months. Among them, the shortest period is only ten days. Most of these products guarantee a lowest annual interest rate of 4.2 to 4.8 percent, much higher than the current 3.25 percent of the annual deposit interest rate. But experts remind investors to be alert about whether the products guarantee basic capital returns.
