Liu Hui owns a store at the Ma Dian collection market. He says the prices of the 3rd series of RMB banknotes have skyrocketed in the past few years. The price of a 2 yuan banknote in 1960 has been increased to 2,000 yuan, and a 10 yuan banknote, which is called "great unity," sells for 200 yuan. However, they are not the leads in this price race.

"The color of the motif on the back of a common 1 dime banknote is brown. And this one is green, which is called a butterfly model. A green back 1 dime banknote sells for 3,000 to 4,000 yuan, and a greenback with watermark can sell for more than 40,000."

1 dime is worth 40 thousand? Why is it so valuable? Experts say that though it is the 3rd series RMB banknote, it follows the layout of the 2nd series. What's more, it was issued in a short period of time, with limited circulation.

If a green back 1 dime banknote with watermark has 3 or 5 eight as the tail number, believe it or not, it can easily sell for 300,000 yuan.

"Collectors love novelty. The better the number, the higher the price."

The 3rd series RMB banknotes are the most collected, because they are the latest out of use RMB that had the longest circulation time.

Wang Tianran is a guest expert of the China Association of Collectors. He says souvenir banknotes such as 100 yuan banknote issued in 2000 and 10 yuan banknote issued before the 2008 Beijing Olympics are most popular.

"This is called the 'millennium dragon banknote'. It was issued in 2000, the Year of the Dragon. The issue size is only 1 million. Therefore many people believe it can appreciate. The price of the millennium dragon banknotes hiked in the past few months, from 380 to 3,800 yuan."

The 10 yuan souvenir banknote of the 2008 Beijing Olympics is called emerald by RMB collection insiders. One piece of 10 yuan banknotes can sell for 5,000 yuan and are still in fresh demand.

Why the old and souvenir banknotes are worth so much? Apart from the scarcity of banknotes and market demand, it's because lots of hot money is rushing into the RMB collection market.

The unstable stock market makes some investors leave stocks for banknotes. They turn to the RMB market and invest in "money". As far as to the active condition of the collection market in recent days, investors are much more than the genuine collectors, which makes this market fragile and risky.

Wang Yanbin is the supervisor of the Bao Guo Temple cultural products market. He witnessed the ups and downs of the RMB collection market in the last two decades.

"In the past few years the price of the old RMB soared. It followed the economic trend, but another reason is due to some people's speculation. If the price is too high, it's time to take a nosedive, and some people will be out of luck."

There is nothing wrong to collect old RMB banknotes for a hobby, and it's fine to invest a small amount of money in this market. But be cautious of risks, and don't be the last one, who takes the baton.
