Chapter 1. The Garden of Eden (Part I)

№.1 - It was extraordinary how everything burst forth at this time of year! What made this great mass of green vegetation come welling up from the dead earth as soon as it got warm and the last traces of snow disappeared?

【短語筆記】well?up?-?v.

Tears?well?up?in?one's?eyes.(淚如泉涌。)

№.2 - Whenever Sophie’s mother was in a bad mood, she would call the house they lived in a menagerie.

【短語筆記】in?a?bad?mood - 心情不好

【例】-?"Everybody?seems?to?be?in?a?bad?mood."?-?"What?gives?"(“人們似乎心情都不好。”

№.3 - Sophie stood on the gravel path, thinking. She tried to think extra hard about being alive so as to forget that she would not be alive forever. But it was impossible.

【短語筆記】so?as?to - 為了(做)……,以便(做)……

【例】I?left?a?message?so?as?to?be?sure?of?contacting?her.(我留下了張條子以便與她取得聯(lián)系。)

№.4 - The same thing happened the other way around: only by conjuring up an intense feeling of one day being dead could she appreciate how terribly good it was to be alive. It was like two sides of a coin that she kept turning over and over. And the bigger and clearer one side of the coin became, the bigger and clearer the other side became too.

【短語筆記】conjure?up?-?vt.?憑空想出,虛構(gòu)出……[①to?present?to?the?mind;?evoke?or?imagine?②to?call?up?or?command?(a?spirit?or?devil)?by?an?incantation]

【例】Your?sad?devotion?to?that?ancient?religion?hasn't?helped?you?conjure?up?the?stolen?data?tapes.(你對(duì)于那個(gè)古老的信仰的忠誠(chéng)沒能幫你召喚回丟失的磁帶。)
