The third International Nutrition and Health Industry Expo is being held at the Beijing Exhibition Center on April 19th to 21st. Both Chinese and foreign companies will be vying for business and exposure at the event.

Crowds are still coming through the doors as the expo enters its second day. Several foreign nutrition producers, showing their wares here, remain relatively unknown in China, but have profiles abroad.

Despite this, most are confident about entering the Chinese market.

For 2010, the nutrition industry's products are expected to reach 52 dollars per head internationally, but in China the figure is only 10 dollars.

CCTV reporter Bai Jie said, "According to statistics, the nutrition and health industry is growing rapidly in developed countries, but in China it lags behind. A lack of awareness, safety concerns and misunderstanding related to nutritional products are thought to be behind this setback."

Due to water, air and soil pollution, the nutritional level of foods in China is lower, according to various official tests. And the recent spate of food safety scandals has affected public confidence.

Purchaser Liu Ziqiang said, "Most Chinese prefer buying foreign nutrition products. In China, the entry criteria for the nutrition industry is not strict enough. The market is in disorder to a certain extent."

To keep the trust of their Chinese consumers, many foreign companies establish test centers in supermarkets. Chinese companies also have their ways.

Jiang Meiling, BY-Health, said, "We promise to consumers that all the ingredients we choose are the best in the world, and they are identified by authoritative testing centers."

According to government officials, food and nutrition production will be a top priority this year, which is crucial for protecting people's health.
