According to the 2010 China Marriage and Relationship Survey Report, 260m Chinese are looking for love – 180m singles and 80m concerned parents. Defined by the All-China Women's Federation, single women above the age of 27 are called "leftover women" and single men older than 30, "leftover men". Compared with desperate leftover women, the problem of leftover men may be worse.
Leftover women, this has been a much talked, and often controversial phrase in China in the past few years. It generally refers to single women above the age of 27.
However, there are not only many women failed to find their loved ones these days, the situation of men could be more challenging.
According to a marriage and relationship survey in 2010, most women wish to marry a man who works as a public servant, while most men prefer a woman who works as a teacher. Wang Zhiguo is from a domestic matchmaking website...
"The survey shows more single women hope their prospective Mr. Right have an apartment and car. Also, it shows more men underestimate themselves, more than 20% single men hold a sense of inferiority when it comes to marriage and relationships."
However high expectations and a lack of confidence are not the only reasons why many men can't find a wife. Gender imbalance makes the situation even worse.
The latest figures show that 119 boys are born for every 100 girls in China. As a result, more than 24 million bachelors could find themselves without spouses by 2020, according to a report from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
Moreover, women usually choose prospective husband among those more capable men in terms of wealth and social status, especially well-educated women who have decent job and good salary. They won't commit to marriage until they find a perfect candidate. So they choose to be single by themselves.
In contrast, the issue of men is different. Most of those who can't find a wife are disadvantaged economically and culturally and face social discrimination. They have strong physical needs which cannot be satisfied through normal and socially acceptable means.
Therefore, the disadvantaged single men could become a major source of social instability.
Some of them say they find it hard even to make acquaintance with the girl they favor without financial strength, let alone asking for their love.
Hou Zhiming, expert on marriage and relationship gives her advice. "Marriage is based on the fact that man and woman love each other, and they are willing to take responsibility for each other, when they are supportive to each other, the relationship can grow healthily."
Hou Zhiming says if men or women want to find love, the first thing they should learn is to give rather than take.
She also suggests men to be more confident, as confident men give women a sense of security. A confident man makes a woman more confident about the relationship and the future.
