New Zealand police say the confirmed death toll from the devastating Christchurch earthquake has risen to 163. The announcement comes a day after authorities declared search and rescue operations over.

Just 20 of the 163 bodies have been publicly identified. Authorities say the identification process is slow because of the extreme nature of the injuries.

They say the job now is to recover bodies still in the building ruins. Many more people are missing and officials expect the final number of dead to surpass 200.

Civil Defense national controller, John Hamilton, says some survivors and residents would be provided accommodation in a temporary tent village.

John Hamilton, Civil Defense national controller, said, "As we get through into the deeper levels of building evaluations, we will expect to be moving people out and they'll have to go into some sort oftemporary accommodation. That may start as a tented village which we've got on order."
